American Icon, 1929 - 1994
Jacqueline (Jackie) Lee Bouvier was born on July 28, 1929 in Southampton, New York. She received her primary education at the best private schools and was dubbed “Debutante of the Year” in 1948. Jackie began her college education at Vassar, finally graduating from George Washington University in 1952.
After graduation, Jackie took a job as a photographer for a Washington, D.C. newspaper. Soon after, she met Senator John F. Kennedy. The couple were married in 1953. Their daughter Caroline was born in 1957 and John Jr., in 1960.
The inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961 brought to the White House a beautiful young wife and the first young children in half a century. Jackie’s courage after President Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas in 1963 won her the world’s admiration.
In 1968, Jackie married Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis. Onassis died in 1975, and from 1978 until her death in 1994, Jackie worked as an editor for Doubleday in New York City.
