Cathedral de Santa Maria la Menor, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, located in the colonial district of Santo Domingo, is the oldest cathedral in the Americas, begun in 1514 and completed in 1540. Fronted with a golden-tinted coral limestone facade, the church combines elements of both Gothic and Baroque architecture.

Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Ciudad Colonial (Spanish for Colonial City) is the first settlement made by Spanish explorers in the Americas. Colloquially known as "Zona Colonial" (Colonial Zone), Ciudad Colonial is part of the original Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The district dates back to the 1500s and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The district covers about five square kilometers.
