Kamakura Great Buddha, Kamakura, Japan
The Kamakura Great Buddha, a monumental bronze statue of Amida Buddha, is located at the Ktoku-in Temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The statue is approximately 43.8 feet (13.35 meters) tall including the base and weighs approximately 93 tons. The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large hall. The temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tidal wave in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since 1495, the Buddha has been standing in the open air. I visited the temple in March 2013.
